Description

September 2026 SMART Talk: What’s Working (and What Isn’t) in this Single IRB World It might seem like only yesterday (or forever and a day), but in truth, we’ve been living with federal single IRB requirements for almost a decade. Generally, we have adapted well and learned much from each other along the way, so that setting up reliance arrangements and using a single IRB goes smoothly more often than not. But sometimes… well, certain aspects of single IRB remain headache inducing and seem to resist easy fixes. And, while some organizations are old pros at single IRB, others are just getting their bearings for their reliance journey. Join our panelists for a candid look at the current single IRB landscape, roses, warts, and all. We’ll discuss processes, tools, and approaches that can make single IRB arrangements easier to navigate, as well as pitfalls to avoid and opportunities to work together to make a better, brighter single IRB world. Moderator: • Nichelle Cobb, Senior Advisor, SMART IRB; Senior Advisor for Strategic Initiatives, Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) Presenters: • Beth Poplaski, Senior Reliance Specialist, Emory University • Wanda Quezada, Director, Regulatory Oversight, Houston Methodist Research Institute • Lisa Rigtrup, Senior Manager, Single IRB Reliance, University of Utah Wednesday, September 16, 2025 2:00 PM ET | 1:00 PM CT | 12:00 PM MT | 11:00 AM PT
