IRB Topics: Demystifying IRB Exemption 4/10 12-1pm EST

Apr 10 • 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Ever wonder why one study qualifies for exemption while a similar study doesn’t? It isn’t always as obvious as you might think. Our determinations are made by navigating nuanced and very technically written exemption categories in the federal regulations. This presentation will demystify IRB exemption categories via a deep dive into them along with interpretation and commentary to flesh out the nuances.

Goals for the Session:

Research teams can expect to leave the presentation with…

  • A clear understanding of what makes research “exempt” versus requiring expedited or full board review.
  • Knowledge of the specific requirements and limitations of each exemption category.
  • The ability to distinguish between studies that likely qualify and those that don’t through real-world examples.
  • Insight into institutional interpretation of regulatory criteria, including what Limited IRB Review means.
  • Confidence in submitting on the right form and navigating modification requirements.

The presentation will take roughly 40 minutes with time for audience questions. Participants are eligible to earn 1 hour of RCR credit to satisfy NU-RES requirements (please reach out the presenter at the end of the presentation if you want RCR credit).
