Special edition for Policy 505 change! IN THIS NEWSLETTER: Changes to Policy 505 New Guidance: Recruiting and Enrolling Your Students Updated Consent Form Templates Drop-in Hours
Changes to Policy 505 We’re pleased to announce that Northeastern has updated Policy 505: Policy on Human Subjects Research. This policy outlines the basic requirements for researchers conducting human subjects research at Northeastern. While most of the changes are minor, there is one substantive change that we are excited to announce: the revised policy will now allow Northeastern researchers to recruit their students into their research studies. We recognize that the previous policy was holding back some high-impact educational research and we’re eager to see the innovative and impactful research this change will enable. We do want to highlight that you should not be recruiting your students based on convenience. Study teams should only recruit their own students when the research aims dictate so.
New Guidance: Recruiting and Enrolling Your Students Including minors in research is often one of the more complex regulatory challenges—particularly in studies involving minors in foster care or those seeking to waive parental permission. We’re pleased to announce the publication of new guidance on this topic. We hope this guidance is clear about expectations while allowing for the flexibility needed for the diverse research methodologies and paradigms we see at Northeastern. See our Guidance page for all our guidance documents.
Updated Consent Form Templates We’ve made some updates to our consent templates to make them more user-friendly, clearer, and to help address some common errors we see. We’ve also consolidated our forms – from 3 to 1 — to make the processes a little less confusing. Our expectations for consent remain the same, and we will continue to accept forms using the previous language.
Drop-in Hours Wondering about how the updated policy impacts your research? Or do you want to submit a study recruiting your own students, but aren’t quite sure where to start?
