Research in Action: How Participant Feedback Shapes Research How do we design interventions that truly improve family life while advancing science? On the one hand, you’re motivated to design an intervention that will meet the needs of “real people” (in this case, families). And, on the other hand, the intervention must be firmly based on established theory and research so that you can test meaningful hypotheses that will ultimately advance practice and science. In this interview, Professor Laurie Kramer shares her expertise in navigating the balance between theory and real-world impact.
New Guidance: Minors in Research Including minors in research is often one of the more complex regulatory challenges—particularly in studies involving minors in foster care or those seeking to waive parental permission. We’re pleased to announce the publication of new guidance on this topic. We hope this guidance is clear about expectations while allowing for the flexibility needed for the diverse research methodologies and paradigms we see at Northeastern. See our Guidance page for all our guidance documents
IRB Drop-In Hours Expanded IRB Drop-in hours are expanded! In addition to our 11am Monday hours and 12pm Wednesday hours, we have added drop-in hours at 2pm on Tuesdays and 10am on Thursdays. If you have questions about anything IRB-related, these drop-in hours are a great way to get any IRB questions you might have answered. Attendees can join and leave at their leisure. Note that there are some exceptions to our scheduling for holidays and other events. Please be sure to visit our Calendar of Events which lists all our events, including drop-in hours, for our scheduled hours and details of how to join.
New Resource: Example Exempt Study We’ve put together an example exempt submission packet with all the materials needed for review and approval. The protocol outlines a mock study to help the NU research community understand the level of detail and key information that should be included for an exempt research study submission. This mock study starts with a short survey and includes a possible follow-up interview. To guide research teams, we’ve added in-line comments that highlight our review process and the key elements we focus on.
Featured Friend of the DHR: Ulica Ulica, Ashley’s cat and occasional co-reviewer, maintains a very busy schedule and often finds it hard to complete all of her normal kitty activities while napping for 20 hours a day. However, she still finds time to complete her training in human subjects research, seen here reading up on the elements of informed consent (which she plans to apply the next time her mom wants to trim her nails).
